French Parliament Considering Bill Outlawing Media Images of Extreme Thinness
France is considering a controversial bill that would ban media protrayal of ultra-skinny models. Last month France’s lower house adopted a bill that would make it illegal for anyone — including fashion magazines, advertisers and Web sites — to publicly “incite anorexia.” Legislation won unanimous support from the ruling conservative UMP party. It goes to the Senate in the coming weeks. Fashion industry experts said that, if passed, the law would be the strongest of its kind anywhere. Leaders in French couture are strongly opposed to the idea of legal boundaries on beauty standards.
Spain had, in 2007, banned cachectic models from catwalks.
This Bill adopted by France’s National Assembly is the latest in a series of measures at tackling eating disorders within the fashion industry to be proposed after the anorexia-related death of a Brazilian model in 2006.
What is your opinion on this measure?
